U.S. Mint to Release Benjamin Harrison Presidential Silver Medal
As part of its Presidential Silver Medal Series, the U.S. Mint will release the Benjamin Harrison commemorative medal for sale on February 10th, 2025. Harrison was the 23rd President of the United States, serving one term (1889-1893). He was the grandson of the ninth president, William Henry Harrison. These medals are one troy ounce of 99.9% silver and are collector’s items and not a circulating currency. The front of the medal has a right facing profile bust of Harrison. The back has the words “Inaugurated President of the United States March 4 1889”. The cost of the medal is $90.
An Ohio native, Harrison was a lawyer in Indiana before being commissioned Colonel of the newly recruited 70th Indiana Infantry on August 7th, 1862. In January of 1864, Harrison was promoted to brigade command in the 20th Corps of Major General William T. Sherman’s Army of the Cumberland. His brigade included his 70th Indiana.
Harrison had seen little action, serving with his regiment in garrison duty and guarding railroads, until May of 1864. At that time, his brigade marched south as part of Sherman’s Atlanta Campaign. Harrison distinguished himself in the campaign, particularly at the Battles of Resaca and Peachtree Creek.
After the Civil War ended, Harrison resumed practicing law in Indiana. He also entered politics, and served in the U.S. Senate from 1881-1887. He was elected as the 23rd President of the United States in 1888, and defeated for reelection in 1892 by Grover Cleveland, whom he had defeated in the 1888 election.
